Effective Public Communication

Project 1: Photo Blog

We were required to create a photoblog in a group of five people. This photoblog had to document our place of interest, which was Little India in Brickfields, in the following aspects : People, Food, Activities and Cultural Conservation on Buildings. The blog had to contain 25 to 30 photos and each photo was to have a caption of about 20 to 30 words.

Reflection

     The learning outcomes intended for this assignment were to apply the principles of communication and behaviour in analyzing interaction with others at the individual and group levels as well as to be aware of the importance of cultural differences and to respect it. Besides that, healthy and positive relationships with fellow students were to be built. Finally, we were to communicate the relevant ideas in a clear, logical and appropriate academic English.


   Through this photoblog, I was able to express my visual creativity. After visiting Little India, I was able to understand my culture even more. I was also able to improve my academic English through this photo blog. This assignment was certainly an interesting one to complete as it involved a lot of group work and I was able to communicate with my group mates even better. This assignment also enabled me to open my eyes to all the tiny details that cannot be seen in my daily life.  At the end, all the learning outcomes intended for this module was achieved.

Project 2: Oral Presentation

We were to produce a video presentation based on traditional dwellings around the world. The historical background of the country, structure and layout, types of ornamentation used and the types of materials used were to be described in the presentation. We chose to describe the Four Cornered Courtyard Houses in China.

Reflection

   The learning outcomes intended for this assignment were to apply the principles of communication and behaviour in analyzing interaction with others at the individual and group levels as well as to be aware of the importance of cultural differences and to respect it. Besides that, healthy and positive relationships with fellow students were to be built. Finally, we were to communicate the relevant ideas in a clear, logical and appropriate academic English.

   Through this oral presentation, my academic English speaking skills were further improved. I was also able to communicate effectively with my group mates by exchanging ideas. My documentation skills were also improved through this assignment as all the research materials were to be compiled coherently. Through our group discussions, our relationship as a group was strengthened. Through the research I conducted for my part of the assignment, I was able to understand the basis of a traditional Chinese home. Through the research conducted by my group mates, my understanding of these homes was expanded further as well. In the end, all the intended learning outcomes and objectives were achieved.

Project 3: Comic Strip

For this final assignment, we were required to create a 3 A3 size comic strip that describes events related to our daily life, special occasions and events in campus. These comic strips were also to be based on one of the topics given during lecture sessions of this module. We decided to base our comic strips on the topic Intimacy.

Reflection

  This was certainly an interesting assignment to undergo as it enabled me to communicate at a group level and this enabled my communication skills to improve tremendously. Through the generation of ideas with my group mates, I was also able to express my creative side in coming up with a storyline as well as a storyboard for this comic strip. Besides that, my understanding of the topics covered across this module was improved as well because in order to choose an appropriate topic to suit our story line, we had to understand all the topics. In the end, all the intended learning outcomes and objectives were achieved.
