Mathematics

After undergoing this module, I was able to achieve all the learning outcomes that were intended, which are to understand and apply fundamental mathematical principles such as basic algebra, trigonometry, properties of circles, area, volume, differentiation, integration and statistics. I was also able to analyze and solve problems that involved various mathematical principles as well as apply mathematical knowledge in the built environment context. Finally, I was able to collect, organize, present and draw conclusions for simple statistical data. Throughout this entire module, my creative and critical thinking and problem solving skills were developed further through the assignments provided. Beside that, my understanding of the concepts of calculus were honed and applied in my daily life. This module also extended my knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and their applications.

Our first assignment involved the understanding of surface areas and volumes of a given 3D object which is formed by several different solid geometrical shapes. In a group of 5, were were supposed to determine the surface areas and volumes of 9 objects related to the built industry which have the following categories a total surface area of less than 500cm2, a total surface area between 501cm2 and 50000cm2 and a total surface area of more than 50000cm2. After undergoing this assignment, I was able to sharpen my mathematical calculation skills based on surface areas and volumes. This assignment helped me to understand how mathematical concepts can be applied to my daily life. In the end, all the intended learning outcomes for this assignment were achieved.

The second assignment involved statistical data in which we had to handle. We were to propose a statistical study and collect the appropriate data through surveying, organizing, presenting and analyzing this data in order to draw a conclusion from this study. We were required to design our own survey forms and had to complete 100. This assignment was an interesting assignment as it involved more outside the classroom skills. My communication with others was improved as I had to ask a lot of people to fill up our survey form. After the data was collected, we used Microsoft Excel to organize the data and as it was my first time using it, I was able to gain extra knowledge. During the analyzing process, my mathematical concepts based on statistics were further improved. In the end, all the intended learning outcomes for this assignment were achieved.

In conclusion, this module has helped me a lot in my semester especially in the form of model- making. I was able to use the formulas for surface areas and apply them to my design in order to ensure that it was logical and appropriate. Besides that, after completing this module, my understanding of mathematical concepts was further improved especially in the built environment context as the assignments had a lot of outside classroom work. The syllabus was relevant and easy to understand as the lectures were clear and very detailed. The knowledge I gained module will certainly help me a lot in the future.
